Events and Programs

Our Library has multiple events which are free to the public. Every month is something new so make sure to visit our website or Facebook often to see what program may be of interest to you.

 

Program Descriptions

The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Library has various programs occurring throughout the year for children, teens, and adults. Below you can find a list of our regular programming, but make sure to check on the flyer for specific dates and times.

Adult Crafts

Each month adults can explore their creative side with our fun and easy to follow along crafts. Please check the calendar above for specific activities, dates, and times.

Book Club

Held every other month. Attendees can look forward to light refreshments and a book themed craft during the program. Adults interested in joining please call the library to request the current book club title.

Computer & Smartphone Classes

Topics differ depending on the class schedule, but can include Smartphone Skills, Telehealth, Basic Computer Skills, Internet Safety, Google Suite, Microsoft Word, etc.

Conversational English Session

Learn how to communicate confidently in English with everyday topics. Classes are twice a week on Wednesdays at 2:30 PM.

Conversational Spanish Class

Learn how to communicate in Spanish with easy activities. Classes are twice a week on Wednesdays at 2:30 PM.

Hand in Nature

Children will learn how to interact with nature and do fun nature themed activities. This program is offered once a month with a 10:30 and 5:30 session. Aimed towards children 2 to 12.

Pokémon Club

For ages 5 to 14, children and tweens will learn how to connect, build their reading/math skills, and learn strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.

Reading with Royalty

Miss Mercedes 2025, Lacie Andrea Silva visits each month to read to the children. She also does a fun craft or activity with them. Aimed towards children aged 3 to 10.

Reading with Royalty (STEM Edition)

Mr. Mercedes 2025, JJ Garza, visits the library every month to do STEM activities with the children. Aimed towards children aged 5 to 15.

RedRover Readers RGV

Children will learn how to empathize with animals with this special program that includes a themed book and craft. Aimed towards children aged 5 to 11.

STEAM

From Lego Days to robotics to art classes, each month children can learn something new about the world around them. Aimed towards children 5 to 17.

Thinking Money for Kids

Children learn about budgeting, saving, and spending wisely. Filled with age appropriate activities that make learning about money fun for kids. Launchpads are also available for checkout for extra practice at home. Aimed towards children aged 3 to 12.

Toddler Time

Seasonally themed events that allow toddlers to interact with other children their age. Parents and caregivers are highly encouraged to play alongside their toddlers. Aimed towards children aged 1 to 5.

LEAP Program

Activities & Backpack Categories

We are proud to announce the implementation of the Library Explorer Adventure Pack (LEAP)! Sponsored by Driscoll Health Plan, the library has officially launched the program as of Spring Break 2023. With LEAP, patrons may check out special themed backpacks containing a variety of books, guides, nature tools, and other cool goodies meant to teach its user more about the great outdoors. The backpacks can be checked out for a two-weeks and brought back for others to enjoy.
Categories include: Stargazing & Night Critters, Birds & Birding, Native Plants & Botany, Gardening & Cooking with Plants (ENG & SPA), Fish & Fishing, and Outdoor Skill Building.
